You may be eyeing up a copy of The Last of Us Part II wondering just how many hours of story you’re getting from Naughty Dog’s universally acclaimed sequel. Just how long is The Last of Us Part 2?
It’s no secret that many of this generation’s best AAA video game experiences can often take a long time to finish – in some cases we’re talking weeks and weeks of steady play.
Sony’s own stable of PlayStation heavy hitters have been guilty of this, from God of War and Horizon: Zero Dawn to Marvel’s Spider-Man and Days Gone. Each one of these PS4 hits boasts a vast swathe of content and can take ages to beat, especially if you’re delving into each of their massive worlds with the intent to explore side content and hoover up all those trophies.
Some of you will be relieved to hear that The Last of Us Part II doesn’t follow this trend. Naughty Dog’s sequel is longer than your typical linear single player game but never outstays its welcome.
How long is The Last of Us Part II?
In our initial reviewer’s playthrough, The Last of Us Part II took just over 26 hours to finish. That’s a fair chunk of time and we suspect that most players will clock in a little under that total. How long the game takes to beat will depend on the chosen difficulty level (we had it Hard, just below Survivor) though we only needed a handful of retries during some of those tougher combat encounters.
However, we did spend time thoroughly scouring each chapter, taking every opportunity to search for collectibles, trigger optional conversations, and dive into Part II’s photo mode (which will be available to all players at launch).
Therefore, if you were wondering how long it takes to beat The Last of Us Part II on normal difficulty, we’d estimate a solid 18-20 hours to complete the main story from start to finish. Of course, if you’re skipping through cinematics and perhaps playing on New Game + then you should be able to shave off an extra few hours if not more.
It’s a surprisingly lengthy game and this more than makes up for the fact that Naughty Dog drops the Factions online multiplayer from the original game.
Here’s the conclusion from our review of The Last of Us Part II in which we scored the game a jaw-dropping 10/10:
The Last of Us Part II is a remorseless epic delivering in its masterful storytelling, nail-biting gameplay and unrivalled production values. Naughty Dog have truly surpassed themselves yet again, crafting a heartfelt sequel that will leave you gasping as they continue to raise the bar for the video game industry. It’s yet another must-buy for PlayStation 4 owners, supercharging Sony’s unstoppable stable of exclusives.
