Of course Team17 are working on a new Worms game, but this one’s a Worms game with a twist. Worms Rumble is trading in the series’ traditional turn-based battling for real time online multiplayer! The game will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and PC in late 2020.
That’s right, everything in Worms Rumble happens in real time, and Team17 are embracing all the carnage that can lead to with up to 32 players in game modes like Deathmatch and Last Worm Standing, and ensuring you’ll always be able to find a match with cross-platform and cross-generational multiplayer.
You’ll be able to level up and go through ranks, earning new weapon skins, customisations and emotes, though you’ll obviously have access to all the weapons in the game, including series staples like the Baseball Bat, Hand Cannon, Bazooka, Assault Rifle, and Shotgun. There’ll even be a Holy Hand Grenade.
The launch later this year will just be the start for the game, with content updates adding new arenas and customisations. There will also be seasonal events, daily and community challenges and ‘The Lab’ will be there to trial new gameplay ideas and weapons.
Ahead of all that, Team17 have opened up registrations for a closed beta for Worms Rumble on Steam. That will run later this month, from Wednesday 15th July at 12pm BST and runs through to Monday 20th July at 8am BST.
Believe it or not, it’s actually been four years since the last Worms game, with Worms WMD seen as the definitive Worms game after years of iteration and subtle changes in direction – well, there was also that whole Worms 3D thing in the mid-2000s…

Worms WMD feels more like the classic Worms titles with its explosive mayhem and tongue-in-cheek humour. Vehicles, turrets, and crafting all freshen up the formula somewhat, while the new 2D art direction mixed with the classic simplistic structure of Worms campaigns make for a welcome and familiar experience. Still, there’s not much out there quite like Worms and Worms WMD is a great rendition of that explosive madness.
Here’s hoping Team17 have managed to capture that same spark while making the jump to real time.

I guess I new Worms game was inevitable, being 25 years since the first one. Which makes me feel old.
But real time?? I’d get all upset and say it’s not right, but any series of games that features weapons such as a concrete donkey or an old woman has pretty much earned the right to do whatever it wants and expect people to just go with it.
