Far Cry 6 has officially revealed by Ubisoft, confirming the leak and teaser of the last few days.The game will be out on 18th February 2021, coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, Stadia, and PC via Epic Games and Uplay. As with Ubisoft’s other upcoming game, you will get free upgrades from Xbox One to Xbox Series X and from PlayStation 4 to PlayStation 5.
Starring Giancarlo Esposito, who’s best known for his role in Breaking Bad, the game is set in the war-torn tropical paradise of Yara. Esposito’s character, Anton Castillo, rules this land with an iron fist, attempting to restore it to its former glory as a guerrilla revolution rages in the modern day. He hopes that his son, Diego, will follow in his footsteps.
You obviously don’t play as either of these characters, but rather as Dani Rojas, a Yaran who’s rising up against the oppressive regime.
The game takes part in a city for the first time, with Esperanza providing an urban setting for the war to take in as you fight for territory and to depose Anton from his seat of power.
There’s plenty of weapons, vehicles and animal companions promised, but by far the best of them all is going to be Chorizo, a vicious little sausage dog!
Many have actually speculated that Far Cry 6 is a prequel to Far Cry 3, since the game’s leak this week. The scar on Diego’s right eyebrow is certainly rather similar to the scar on Vaas’ right eyebrow from Far Cry 3. This being a modern day setting could undercut that, but that could refer to the early 21st century. Nothing has been confirmed about that from Ubisoft, though.
We had great things to say about the last numbered game in the Far Cry series. For our Far Cry 5 review, Gareth concluded:
“Far Cry 5 is another improvement to a series that hit its stride quite a long time ago. It gets a recommendation not because of any of its individual features, but because they all combine together into a game that becomes paradoxically funny and horrifying, occasionally at the same time. It depicts a part of America lovingly with its tongue very firmly glued to its cheek, but when I close my eyes, I still see Joseph Seed staring back at me.”
Can Far Cry 6 continue that strong form and reinvigorate the series further?

That was an excellent trailer, I’ve not been gripped by a game trailer like that in a good while, very cinematic and a grimly well written little monologue. It’s weird though, despite being very impressed I don’t feel the need to buy the game, probably because I can’t get over the association between Ubisoft and their open-world staple. And that’s despite loving the games I have played, the last of which was probably Watch Dogs and before that Far Cry 3, both were excellent but I’m still not excited for more.

Ubisoft’s problem seems to be that they make sequels for people who either quite liked or at least didn’t hate a game. And then end up with a sequel that more people like, but isn’t what the people that really enjoyed the original game wanted.
Watch Dogs was good, the sequel fixed all the things people who thought the first game was just OK had problems with. End result: something not as good and more of a generic Ubisoft game.
Far Cry 3 was great, 4 and 5 were more of the same, but turning into a bland open world map with random things to do and possibly a story somewhere, but I forget what they were.
And AC Origins/Odyssey are great games, but absolutely terrible AC games.
All their big open world games are technically good games, it’s just the constant refining the formula, seemingly based on some fairly simple measure of what people want, seems to be dragging them all towards some sort of good, but ultimately forgettable, fun.
Obviously it’s a bit more complicated than that, because Valhalla seems to be ignoring the fact that everyone played Odyssey as Alexios and not lady Alexios (what was she even called?), and has the same option again.
