GenDesign is a studio in Japan made up of employees who previously worked on Ico, Shadow of the Colossus and The Last Guardian. The studio was set up sometime in 2014 during the development of The Last Guardian, during which the original developers, Team ICO, were disbanded when Fumito Ueda left Sony in 2011 and eventually set up GenDesign.
Since the launch of The Last Guardian things have been rather quiet with only the release of a tech demo, The Last Guardian VR, which allowed PSVR users to get up close and personal with Trico.
Meanwhile, GenDesign have been prototyping their new game which is now being funded by Epic rather Sony, so whatever they have planned will be coming to PC and quite probably both PlayStation and Xbox. To usher in the new year the team put a new image up on their website which give us our first look at what must be their next game.
As you can see the number of the year are filled with images from Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, The Last Guardian, and the final number one has an mystery image. The image shows a cloaked figure resting against a large rock, but does show some lovely next-gen reflections.
There’s not much to go on but we can probably conclude that they really aren’t going for anything dramatically different in terms of colour palate.
We gave The Last Guardian 8/10 in our review, saying “All round, The Last Guardian feels meticulously pieced together and is easily one of the PlayStation 4’s stronger exclusive titles. It’s risky and unconventional, flouting modern design practices in a way that few other AAA game would dare to in 2016. Although far from perfect and a little worn from age, it’s a one of a kind experience and hopefully won’t be the last we see from Fumito Ueda and this enchanting world.”
