Our Most Wanted Games of 2021 – #5 Resident Evil Village

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard was a remarkable turning point for the long-running Japanese survival horror franchise. Although Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 certainly have their fair share of fans (backed up by Capcom sales figures) these sequels had steered the series away from its roots, shelving horror staples for something more flashy, action-packed and cinematic.

Played entirely in first person, Resident Evil 7 took us down south as new protagonist Ethan Winters went in search of his wife, Mia. This leads him on a grim odyssey into the swamps of Louisiana and into the clutches of Mia’s deranged relatives, the Baker family. Sneaking around the overgrown plantation, solving puzzles, and evading the Baker patriarch, Jack, it made for an incredibly tense survival horror action game that only faltered towards the very end as Capcom tried to merge RE7 with the wider series.

There’s a lot we still don’t know about Resident Evil VIII (or Village) apart from the fact that it’s a direct sequel. After two back-to-back Resident Evil remakes, Capcom are forging ahead with another first person entry that picks up a few years after the events of RE7. We’re told that there’s a confrontation between Ethan and Resi icon Chris Redfield – one that leads them to a snowy European village where this game presumably takes place.

We’re hoping for even more scares this time around, duelling terrifying monsters and having the freedom to explore haunting locales. Reuniting with a few familiar faces along the way seems likely, especially after the reception Resident Evil 2 Remake and last year’s follow-up received. Some kind of multiplayer component is also being rumoured which we’d be very interested in. As long as it’s more like Resident Evil Resistance than Operation Raccoon City or the dreadful Umbrella Corps.

  1. Currently working and immensely enjoying my way through RE2, I might get RE3 after that, and RE7 has been in my backlog for a while already. I probably won’t be there when this comes out just yet, but the more stealth oriented games of the series are great, I’m looking forward to more of these.
