Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning confirmed for Nintendo Switch

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning – a remaster of the 2012 action RPG – will launch on Nintendo Switch later this year, publisher THQ Nordic have announced. The game will be available to purchase on March 16th.

A spruced up version of the game was released in September 2020 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC after THQ secured the IP. Now Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is preparing to make a splash on Nintendo’s handheld console almost a decade after its original release. This version of the game is a fully fledged port that packs in all the core content as well as both expansions – The Teeth of Naros and Legend of Dead Kel – as well as other bonus DLC. A completely new expansion, Fatesworn, is due for release later this year.

This remaster goes beyond a simple spit n’ shine for modern hardware. Developer Kaiko have rebalanced certain elements to improve the overall experience.

Kingdoms of Amalur didn’t quite make it onto the pantheon of all-time RPG greats though still enjoyed moderate critical acclaim and a small yet dedicated fanbase. Blurring the line between Elder Scrolls style RPG and third person action game, it allowed players to craft their own character using a spread of combat, stealth, and magic powers. Amalur also boasted a star-studded development team with celebrated fantasy novelist R.A. Salvatore on lead writing duty and Todd McFarlane (best known for characters such as Spawn and Venom) helping to define Amalur’s visual style.

Aran reviewed Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning at launch, scoring it a 7 out of 10. Here’s what he had to say:

Kingdoms of Amalur Re-Reckoning is a good solid remaster, just don’t expect much to have changed compared to the original. The world is as magical fantasy as you could get, and it really does draw you in, but some technical issues and a number of repetitive quests can dull the otherwise colourful experience.

The original Kingdoms of Amalur was published by EA and developed by Big Huge Games and 38 Studio. It was meant to be the debut chapter in the Amalur universe with an MMORPG also in development which was later cancelled.
