Crysis Remastered patch adds 60fps modes for PS5 & Xbox Series X|S

A set of patches have been released for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S to enable new graphics modes for the new more powerful consoles. The focus is on delivering 60fps gameplay for both new generation machines, but does so while also offering a variety of graphics modes that prioritise performance, resolution or ray tracing.

The update also adds, for the first time on consoles, the level Ascension to the game.

The update means that the game has the following graphics options:

PlayStation 5

  • Performance mode – 1080p – 60 fps
  • Quality mode – 1800p – 60 fps
  • RayTracing – 1440p – 60 fps

Xbox Series X

  • Performance mode – 1080p – 60 fps
  • Quality mode – 2160p – 60 fps
  • RayTracing – 1440p – 60 fps

Xbox Series S

  • Performance mode – 1080p – 60 fps
  • Quality mode – 2160p – 30 fps
  • RayTracing – 1080p – 30 fps

In theory the only difference between the two more powerful consoles is that the Quality mode runs with up to native 4K on Xbox Series X, while ray tracing acts as a leveller between the two systems to run at up to 1440p. The Xbox Series S makes sacrifices to run at 30fps and lower resolutions, depending on the mode. Dynamic resolution scaling is in effect, and the game is still running in backward compatibility, which affects how Crytek have been able to implement ray tracing, doing so via software.

Support for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S is, to reiterate, achieved via a patch. There is no PS5 SKU on the PlayStation Store, and following on from Zombie Army 4’s similar PS5 aware update, it means that third party developers are able to access similar techniques to those that Sony’s first party developers used for the Days Gone, Ghost of Tsushima and God of War PS5 updates.

Crysis Remastered was remarkable for delivering a primitive low quality form of ray tracing on last generation consoles – our review discussed both PC and console versions of Crysis Remastered finding a flawed product at the time – but the modern machines should be much more competent and perform better.
