The creator of Host along with the Jim Henson company are making a live action horror game

One the best things to come out of lockdown was the fantastic horror film Host in which a group of friends hold a séance over Zoom with predictably nasty results. The movie was universally praised and now some of the team behind the film are going to be making a “live” horror game.

GHOSTS is a full motion video, horror game stepping into the shoes of Night Trap, Phantasmagoria and The 7th Guest. It’s a real-time live action game which means that it has to be played at 10pm in your local time zone. Written and Directed by Jed Shepherd (writer and exec producer of HOST – “The Scariest Movie of the last Decade” – Dread Central & “The Genre Phenomenon of 2020” – Forbes) in partnership with Visible Games & Limited Run Games. The game takes inspiration from the works of Manx screenwriter Nigel Kneale and the blurring of fact and fiction in the found footage movies from the last 25 years. However, unlike previous games in this oft-forgotten genre we’re creating a horror experience that aims to truly chill your blood and send full motion video games screaming into the modern day.

The game has you playing a TV producer for a failing cable channel called FrighTV, their flagship show is called Ghosts but ratings have dropped. You will be watching live feeds of the cast exploring a haunted location and trying not to get caught by the mysterious Long Lady.

Yes, Long Lady, Resident Evil’s Lady Dimitrescu has been hogging all the limelight being super tall so  now it’s time to get obsessed a very long woman.

If you watched the video embedded in the Tweet then you will have heard about one of the game’s unique selling points – you can only play the game at 10pm, any other time and you will be just shown test card.

“What if it’s hard-coded into the narrative of the game that you have to play it at a certain time?” says writer and director Jed Shepherd, “What if everyone in your time zone is playing the game at exactly that moment? It would make it an unprecedented terrifying event. Wouldn’t that be cool?”

The Kickstarter page states that if you can crack the ‘test’ you will have access to an unlockable pre-watershed version where you can “breathe and save your progress”, whatever that means. Oh and there’s no pause button, stop moving for a short while and everyone dies and your game is over

The last game that tried to restrict when it was played, Superhot: Mind Control Delete, was widely criticised, what do you think of Jed’s idea?

The game is coming to all formats, including PlayStation, Xbox and Switch.
