May’s PlayStation Plus games revealed – Get the Wreckfest PS5 upgrade for free

Sony has revealed the games being added to PlayStation Plus in May, with yet another nice surprise for PlayStation 5 owners alongside the two regular PlayStation 4 games that we expect.

The three PS Plus games for May are:

All three games will be available from 4th May to 31st May.

Wreckfest is coming to PS Plus exclusively for PlayStation 5, the new generation upgrade having been announced back in March. It’s a nice freebie and a great game, but it’s surprising on two fronts: this would have been a paid upgrade from the PS4 version that is now being given away for free with PS Plus, and it was originally announced with a 1st June release date. Unless that release date has changed, this could be a full PS Plus exclusive for the first month.

Update: We’ve had it confirmed that the retail and digital PS5 release, as well as the paid upgrades from the PS4 version of Wreckfest are still taking place on 1st June. Everyone can obviously grab the PS5 version of Wreckfest prior to that date via PS Plus, though.

Wreckfest on PS5 promises a whole host of visual improvements, including:

  • 4K60
  • Dynamic dirt on vehicles
  • Improved shadows, particles, and environment lighting
  • Higher resolution textures
  • Increased amount of foliage
  • Godrays
  • New visual effects for skidmarks
  • DualSense haptic effects
  • Much faster loading times

Looking back on its original release, we said in our 9/10 Wreckfest review:

Wreckfest is a surprising triumph in blending the best that sim and arcade racers have to offer in an explosive and visually gratifying package. A few visual issues and overly aggressive AI do little to spoil one of the best driving games of 2019.

Alongside that we have the WW2 multiplayer shooter Battlefield V, a step back to the origins of the series that, while a decent shooter, was overshadowed for fans of the franchise by balance changes made after launch and after significant content updates. There’s sure to be plenty more interest building in the Battlefield series once more, however, with the announcement of Battlefield 6 expected soon. Perfect timing to give away the last game.

There’s also Stranded Deep, a survival game in which you must do your best to not die after being stranded in the Pacific Ocean after a plane crash. You’ll craft, build shelter, try to find food and more.

Don’t forget that there’s still time to add April’s games to your library, which included two PlayStation exclusives and a whole lot of zombies:

  1. It’s so weird that Wreckfest is included. Great, but weird.

  2. It is still weird and remember Control was Free on plus with a free upgrade when it was suppose to happen (with saves being shared) Now Wreckfest.
Makes me wonder in June or July Terminator will be a free PS5 Plus game?!?! Time will tell xD
Looking forward to replaying Wreckfest again plus never played Stranded Deep so happy days.

  3. . I’m very happy with the free Wreckfest upgrade. When the upgrade was first announced I bought it when MrYd said it was available for £14 from Amazon (cheers Yd). I’ve resisted playing it until the upgrade is released so I’m even more pleased it’s out a month early.

    • Sorry if I tempted you to spend £14 you didn’t need to. On the other hand, I saved you spending more than £14 you didn’t need to. So, erm, you’re welcome?

Can you not return it to Amazon? If you’ve not opened it and do it within 30 days of getting it. Since I pointed out it was only £14 on Amazon 31 days ago, even if you instantly rushed off to order it that day, it would have only arrived the next day, so 30 days ago. Bit of a bugger if you’ve unwrapped it, installed it, and then not played it only to have them announce it’s on PS+ though.

  4. Looking forward to giving Wreckfest a go. Also Stranded Deep is a great game if you look past the performance issues.

  5. It’s a decent month. Even if I’ve already played all 3 games.

Wreckfest is a stupid amount of very silly fun. Maybe I’ll start from scratch and play the whole thing again and get the last 3 trophies I needed before the platinum. (A couple of grindy ones, reaching level 50 and winning 20 multiplayer races, although that seems easy to knock out quickly with a friend, plus one for getting a certain car to a stupid speed that I never managed to get right). Some of the more novelty events are great. Even if motorised sofas are as easy to control as you’d expect them to be. (Assuming you don’t expect them to control very well)

Stranded Deep is decent enough, but the framerate seemed a bit dodgy on the base PS4. Maybe it’ll be more stable on the PS5. I’ll give it another go.

And BFV is something everyone should play just to piss off the bottom half of the internet that hated it because, well, whatever their reason for hating it was. Women, I think?

    • The addition of women in BFV was probably one of the stand out features for me for an otherwise pretty mediocre BF. I’m really hoping they’ve upped their game for 6. They need to go back to the old ways of leveling up and unlocking items like in 3 & 4 and do away with this currency nonsense.

Stranded Deep was on my to play list, but I’m thinking of taking it off due to bad reports on the frame rate and underwhelming gameplay. The fact it’s quite hard to platinum is also a deciding factor since I still have far too many other decent games I want to play.

And I couldn’t care less about Wrestfest.

  6. I must have read the article wrong as I thought it was just the PS5 upgrade that was part of PS+.
I haven’t taken the cellophane off so I can send it back.

    • So I’ve just saved you more money? Yay me!

And don’t even suggest that Sony start putting just upgrades on PS+. Or any other sort of DLC that you need the base game for. Well, not as one of the main monthly offerings at least. There’s always been little bits of DLC for PS+ subscribers.

      • My brain must have been a bit mushed when I read it as I should have realised that it’s full games that are given away.
