Battlefield 6 reveal is coming in June – “A true next generation game” that’s still coming to PS4 & Xbox One

EA has stated that the Battlefield 6 reveal will be coming in June, confirming suspicions that were aroused by some not-so-cryptic messages from the Battlefield twitter account. However, in the same conference call to investors, they also admitted that Battlefield 6 will also be coming to last generation consoles, despite also stating that this would be “a true next generation game”.

It turns out that this is just marketing fluff, a statement of intent (or less charitably, a great big fib) for the game’s scope. Battlefield 6 will come to both the new PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It will obviously appear on PC as well.

Per industry analyst Daniel Ahmad who listening in on the conference call:

There is, of course, the possibility that Battlefield 6 could do both. We only have to look back to Battlefield 4 to see how the franchise has been able to bridge the generational divide in the past. While the PS3/Xbox 360 and PS4/Xbox One versions of the game shared a single player campaign, all the same weapons, the same maps and locations, there were key differences. The PS4 and Xbox One both saw the game targeting 60fps instead of 30fps (sacrificing resolution in order to get there), and they also had 64-player modes, while the older generation consoles were limited to 32 players.

Of course, all of that was before we really considered cross-generational and cross-platform multiplayer an option. 64-player battles pushed the PS4 and Xbox One really quite hard, and so, with Battlefield 6 set to push the player count higher, there may be modes and battle sizes inaccessible to the older machines. Alternatively, as we’ve seen with other cross-gen games, the extra PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S power could be pushed toward nailing 4K60 performance with optional 120Hz modes, as we’ve seen offered elsewhere.

Battlefield 6’s development was announced at EA Play Live in June 2020, with EA’s Chief Studios Office Laura Miele saying they are “creating epic battles at a scale and fidelity unlike anything you’ve experienced before.” while showing off a greyboxed demo of the game featuring a much, much higher player count than the 64-player battles found in Battlefield 4, Battlefield 1 and Battlefield V.

In an investor call earlier this year, EA said “[Battlefield 6] takes full advantage of the power of next-generation platforms to bring massive, immersive battles to life with more players than ever before. Featuring maps with unprecedented scale, the next edition of Battlefield takes all the destruction, player agency, vehicle and weapon combat that the franchise is known for and elevates it to another level.”

We won’t have too long to wait. Battlefield 6 will be revealed next month, and the game is set for a late 2021 release. For now, just embrace the Doublethink nonsense that is video games marketing.
