Xbox exclusive The Falconeer is coming to PS5, PS4 and Switch in August

Update 19/05: Wired has now officially announced that The Falconeer: Warrior Edition will be coming to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch on 5th August. This will include every DLC and update to date, bespoke support for the DualSense controller, and an all-new content pack: Edge of the World.

The game will be priced at $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99 digitally, with cross-gen upgrades on PlayStation. Additionally there will be a retail release priced at $29.99 / €29.99 / £24.99 on PlayStation, but £29.99 / €34.99 / $34.99 for Nintendo Switch.

It was the early reveal of this retail edition in Japan that let slip that the game was losing its Xbox exclusivity, as detailed in the original story below.

The game has already reached 500,000 players on Xbox and PC, an impressive milestone for an indie title, though certainly aided by its inclusion in Xbox Game Pass.

It looks like The Falconeer is coming to PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 this summer, as Japanese retailers have listed The Falconeer: Warrior Edition for Sony’s consoles with a release date on 5th August.

This isn’t an isolated retailer jumping the gun, as Amazon Japan, Rakuten and Yodobashi all corroborate the release, being published locally by 3goo. The physical edition will have a 38-page digital game guide and include a 29-track digital soundtrack. It will also include “additional content featuring dragons,” which seems to refer to the DLC “The Hunter” which was the only paid post-release content for the game.

The Falconeer was released in November 2020 for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The game is also available via Xbox Game Pass. Neither party has officially confirmed a port to PlayStation, but it would seem that a 9-month console exclusivity period was in place.

The game was created by solo developer Tomas Sala, an impressive achievement considering the size and lore of the game world, the flight mechanics. Sala has also continued to expand his creation, rebalancing the game’s flight mechanics, improving enemy AI, adding a Kraken, and a whole new piratical faction in Atun’s Folly.

Jason reviewed the game upon release and while he enjoyed it and the world it created, the gameplay didn’t quite catch his imagination as much as he hoped it would:

I find myself a little perplexed by The Falconeer. I still thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game, but it almost felt like I was doing so in spite of how I felt about the gameplay. I do think The Falconeer is going to find an audience that loves it wholeheartedly, but also that there will be plenty of others for whom this falls a bit flat too.

You can read our full review here, but Sala has done considerable work since then to improve and grow his game.
