Microsoft take over the publishing of future iterations of The Outer Worlds

Private Division, the publisher owned by Take-Two, have confirmed that going forward Microsoft will handle all publishing duties for the franchise with Private Division’s last job to be the release of the Nintendo Switch version of the Murder on Eridanos DLC which is already out on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation.

“Private Division is still supporting and marketing The Outer Worlds, including the upcoming release of Murder on Eridanos DLC on Nintendo Switch,” the company said in a statement to GI.Biz, “Moving forward, Obsidian and Microsoft will be publishing future iterations in the franchise, and we’re absolutely thrilled to see where they take it.”

Presumably that means any future games will be Xbox and PC exclusive.

The Outer Worlds: Murder on Eridanos, the second (and final) narrative expansion story expansion to Obsidian’s hit sci-fi RPG and takes you to the skies of Eridanos to try and solve a murder mystery in the Halcyon colony. Rizzo’s spokesperson Halcyon Helen has been offed in the run up to the launch of their new Spectrum Brown Vodka, and it’s up to you to figure out whodunnit. The key to solving the case is the new Discrepancy Amplifier, a gadget that will let you highlight unseen hints and temporal inconsistencies.

Also helping you solve it are new weapons and character customisations. There’s three new science weapons as well as new weapon and armour variants. The character level cap is also increased by three with new perks and flaws available to create an even more unique character.

The Outer Worlds released in 2019 to high praise, not long after Microsoft acquired developer Obsidian Entertainment.  The studio is also hard at work on other projects that are Microsoft exclusives, namely Grounded (which is currently in Game Preview), and the upcoming next-gen exclusive Avowed.
