Battlefield 2042 has now been revealed, and there’s big changes coming to how Classes will work when Battlefield 2042 releases on 19th November 2021 (having recently been delayed). Classes still exist, but they’re now categories for characters that are called Specialists in Battlefield 2042. Let’s find out how they work.
Update: All characters have now been revealed for Battlefield 2042.
In this guide:
- Battlefield 2042 Classes
- Battlefield 2042 Class Weapons, Gadgets & Traits
- Battlefield 2042 Specialists
Battlefield 2042 Classes
Specialists in Battlefield 2042 still conform to four classes. These classes have (once again) been remixed and renamed from previous Battlefield games, but breakdown as follows:
- Assault – Front-line soldiers
- Support – Player support characters, equivalent to Medic in Battlefield V
- Engineer – Tech support characters, equivalent to Support in Battlefield V
- Recon – Stealth characters
Battlefield 2042 Class Weapons, Gadgets & Traits
Here’s the biggest change for the Battlefield series: weapons are not restricted to classes. Any of the characters you pick can equip any of the weapons you unlock in the game, so Assault can equip a sniper rifle, and Recon can tote an LMG. You also have free choice over secondary gadgets.
Instead, each Specialist has their own Specialty Gadget that is unique to them and ties in with their class role, as well as a passive Trait that augments their abilities in a particular direction.
Battlefield 2042 Specialists
Battlefield 2042 will ship with 10 Specialists, with more Specialists being added to the game through each season of the game’s live service. So far four Specialists have been revealed, and one further unnamed character with a Specialist specific wingsuit:
