70s sci-fi CRPG Encased gets a new trailer to invite you under the dome

A new trailer Encased has been released during the Prime Matter E3 2021 stream, the new publishing label founded by Koch Media. A sci-fi CRPG that takes inspiration from classics of the genre, blending it with other influence, the new trailer sets the scene and gives us a look at the kind of gameplay you might expect.

Encased is set in the mid-1970s, a time picked by developer Dark Crystal Games as the final point in our history where there were still some blindspots on Earth’s surface, still some mysteries to discover. The discovery of the Dome brought an end to the Cold War and the space race, with the superpowers of the world turning their focus on the dome and setting up CRONUS to manage access to the Dome and experiments that would take place.

The one thing to know about the Dome is that going in there is a one way trip, and you’ll have to survive whatever anomalies and terrors you’ll find when you get there. You start off as a CRONUS employee, picking from one of the six coloured Wings of the corporation. These align to different classes, so the Black Wing is the security, you have the Silver Wing for management, there’s engineering, scientists, and also convicts that have been handed over to CRONUS for menial tasks.

Inspired by the CRPGs of the late 90s and early 2000s, there’s definitely a bit of Fallout and Fallout 2 to be seen in the world’s design and the power armour that we spotted at one point.

Encased is currently in Early Access on Steam, there’s no release date yet, but the game has been publicly playable since 2019 and had several major content updates.
