Psychonauts 2 release date set for August – see the new gameplay trailer here

Double Fine’s long-in-development sequel Psychonauts 2 will release on 25th August. The game will be coming to Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC on that date – it’s a current gen exclusive to Microsoft since they own Double Fine now. It will, of course, be in Xbox Game Pass from day one.

The blurb from the trailer reads:

Combining quirky missions and mysterious conspiracies, Psychonauts 2 is a platform-adventure game with cinematic style and tons of customizable psychic powers. Psychonauts 2 serves up danger, excitement, and laughs in equal measure as players guide Raz on a journey through the minds of friends and foes on a quest to defeat a murderous psychic villain. Optimized for Xbox Series X|S.

The original Psychonauts originally appeared all the way back in 2005, releasing for PC, Xbox and PS2. Fans have been waiting with baited breath for more news of Psychonauts 2, and it’s been a long, meandering journey for Double Fine and their precious sequel. Announced back in 2015, the project was partly funded via a successful crowdfunding campaign on Fig.

Since then, we’ve been treated to snippet of Psychonauts 2 here and there. Its destiny was brought into question back in 2019 when Microsoft announced it would acquire Double Fine Productions, bringing the developer into their growing Xbox Game Studios stable alongside the likes of Bethesda, Obsidian, and Ninja Theory, to name a few. Finally, we’re getting to the point that Double Fine release the game that they’ve been working on for six long years!
