Xbox Free Games with Gold August 2021: Leaks, Rumours and more

It’s coming toward the end of the month, and I’m sure many of you are eagerly looking forward to the next batch of free games bundled into Xbox Games With Gold. What are the latest rumours? When will the announcement come? Let’s break it down.

When will Xbox Games with Gold August 2021 games be announced?

Good question. Sony have a relatively set pattern when announcing the latest batch of PlayStation Plus games, the last Wednesday of the month, but Microsoft are rather more random. The games are usually announced a day or two before PlayStation Plus, so we’re going to estimate sometime between July 26th and July 28th. It could be any time though, and the reveal usually comes from the Director of Programming for Xbox Live, Larry Hyb, aka Major Nelson, who sends out a Tweet.

The four games are the usual mixture of two Xbox One titles and two Xbox or Xbox 360 games that can be played via backward compatibility. The four games will be made available at different points through the month.

Xbox Games with Gold August 2021 Leaks and Predictions

Well let’s be honest, they’re probably going to be going to be old games – very old games in the case of the two Xbox 360 or original Xbox games. That said the two 360 games are usually full price titles with the likes of Tropico 4, LEGO Batman, Dark Void and Injustice: Gods Among Us having featured recently. If Microsoft wanted to tie in with some upcoming games, they could put Psychonauts in the mix, with Psychonauts 2 coming out on 25th August.

The Xbox One games are even harder to guess and are usually smaller indie titles, but for the months of August or September, Microsoft has regularly given away a Forza game before it’s delisted because of lapsing car and music licenses.

Forza Motorsport 7 GwG August 2021

Could Forza Motorsport 7 be given away with Games with Gold before it’s removed from sale?

Forza Horizon was featured in Games with Gold for September 2016, Forza Motorsport 5 in September 2017, Forza Horizon 2 in August 2018 and Forza Motorsport 6 in August 2019. They broke the pattern in 2020 as Forza Horizon 3 was not featured in Games with Gold before it was delisted, but Forza Motorsport 7 is expected to be removed from sale later this year. Why not give it away?

Can I still download the July 2021 Games with Gold Games?

Yes! You can still grab half of last month’s games. Due to Microsoft’s staggered windows Conker: Live & Reloaded has already exited the service, but the the other three games are still available.

We have reviews of some of the games, with Planet Alpha receiving a solid 7/10 in our review for its modern take on the cinematic platformer. Steve wrote:

“Whilst an enjoyable and undoubtedly beautiful game, Planet Alpha never quite makes the leap into classic territory. There is an admirable sense of vision here and the commitment to a non-verbal narrative is striking, but Planet Alpha remains a functional game under the gorgeous aesthetic. The fusions of cinematic platformer and endless runner often feel at odds with one another as the game pushes you forward when you most want to stand back and enjoy the view. Life here comes at you fast; blink and you’ll be vaporised or crushed by a mile high leviathan.”

Rock of Ages 3 also received a respectable 7/10 in our review for its boulder-based action:

“Rock of Ages 3 stretches the series’ core concept to the limit, but this tower defence and boulder platforming hybrid has still got some legs. Adding a few new game modes and the new level creation tool extends the game’s longevity, but ACE Team could do with refining a few of the rougher edges still in the game.”
