A Nintendo Direct is happening tomorrow night

Nintendo has announced that a new Nintendo Direct stream will take place tomorrow, Thursday 23rd September, with roughly 40 minutes of trailers and announcements to look forward to. Will we see Metroid Dread? Mario Party Superstars? Perhaps something a bit further away like Splatoon 3? Maybe a big expansion of the Nintendo Switch Online service? Your guess is as good as ours.

The one downside to all of this is the timing of the stream. While 3PM PT and 6PM ET is great for US viewers, that’s 11PM BST for us in the UK, and midnight for everyone in Europe. It’s also a bright and early 7AM for Japan…

This will be the first mainline Nintendo Direct since the E3 showcase, which brought with it a fair few surprises. There was the side-scrolling Metroid Dread, which will be coming out alongside the Nintendo Switch OLED on 8th October, Mario Party Superstars, the Danganronpa Decadence release, Advance Wars 1+2: Re-boot Camp and the now released WarioWare: Get It Together. The focus was quite clearly on games coming out toward the end of 2021, and while they might check in with some of them, it could see Nintendo looking forward to the start of 2022 with this stream or revisit some of the long-term projects like Metroid Prime 4 or the sequel to Breath of the Wild.

However, there’s other rumours that have been picking up steam in the last couple of weeks. Filings with the FCC in the US have revealed that Nintendo has a new Nintendo Switch game controller planned, which has led to speculation that they are working to bring a new console and generation of games to the Nintendo Switch Online library of bundled games. This currently contains NES and SNES games, with Nintendo selling wireless remakes of the NES and SNES gamepads for an authentic experience. Could they be about to do the same for the N64?

I guess we’ll just have to tune in tomorrow night to find out.
