Ubisoft’s Driver is being turned into a live action TV series

Because money, someone has decided that the long dead Ubisoft franchise Driver is going to be a live action TV series.

It will follow the plot of the first game released in 1999, because everyone remembers that don’t they? Just in case you do not here’s a quick recap.  Ex-race car driver John Tanner joins the police and becomes and undercover agent in a bid to infiltrate and take down the local crime syndicate. That’s it, it’s a game from 1999, they weren’t that big on plots back then.

So where is this show going? Netflix maybe? Amazon? Nope, it’s going to be released on Binge.

Nope, me neither, I had to look it up.

“Binge is an immersive streaming platform created for the gaming universe. Earn useful Bytz rewards for bingeing exclusive shows, premium channels, and original live-action series where your favorite games come to life,” apparently.

“Our mission at Ubisoft is to bring our games to life in new and exciting ways and create content set in the world, culture, and community of gaming,” said Danielle Kreinik, head of television development, Ubisoft Film & Television. “Working with Binge will allow us to bring a Driver series directly to the audience who is most passionate about seeing this franchise come to life.”

“As longtime fans of the franchise, we’re excited to deliver an original, premium, and rich storytelling experience that will take fans and newcomers on a thrilling ride,” said Allan Ungar for Binge.

Binge subscription free so might be worth a look when it actually launches sometime next year. It will be available on “any Internet-connected device” including phones, TVs and games consoles, although platform partners have yet to be announced.

The last Driver game to be released, and you’d be forgiven for missing it, was Driver: Speedboat Paradise, a free-to-play smartphone game that was released on iOS and Android in December 2014. The last main console game was Driver: San Francisco which we scored 8/10 way back in 2011.
