Chocobo GP brings Final Fantasy kart racing to Nintendo Switch next year

Coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch in 2022, Chocobo GP is a new kart racer set in the Chocobo and Final Fantasy universe.

One of the stranger and more unlikely announcements from last night, Chocobo GP is a sequel to Chocobo Racing on the original PlayStation. The game draws upon that original game and the wider Final Fantasy series for inspiration for its tracks, which include Cid’s Test Track, the streets of Alexandria and Zozo and the Gold Saucer. You’ll be able to race through a story mode, custom races and a bracket-style tournament mode that supports up to 64 players.

It certainly slots into the kart racer genre quite nicely, and it wouldn’t be a kart racer without pick ups, either, with magical magicite found within Magic Eggs that give you attacks like Fire and Aero to try and knock your rivals down a peg. All of the characters – including Chocobo, Vivi, Shiroma and others – all having speed, grip, acceleration and drift stats to give them different attributes in a race, but also come with their own special abilities to use.

As already noted, this is a sequel to Chocobo Racing on the PlayStation, which is held up by some alongside Mario Kart 64 and Crash Team Racing. It’s not the first time that a new Chocobo Racing game has been announced, with Codename: Chocobo Racing 3D announced for the Nintendo 3DS back in 2010. However, three years later, it was confirmed that this had been cancelled. Now they’re taking a second bite of the apple.

  1. If I hadn’t seen that trailer in the Nintendo Direct, I’d have assumed there would be an incoming lawsuit from Nintendo…

That couldn’t be closer to a reskin of Mario Kart 8
