Among Us is coming to PlayStation and Xbox on 14th December

The hit indie social deduction game Among Us will arrive on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on 14th December. For Xbox Game Pass subscribers, the game will join the service on day one, but expect the game to be just a few quid, similar to its price on other platforms.

The game will arrive with full crossplay, meaning that PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC, iOS and Android crewmates can all join up together in the game’s 4-15 player lobbies and double cross each other, sleuth who the killer is, and eject people into outer space.

Among Us was one of the indie hits of last summer, despite actually having released all the way back in 2018. The game was discovered by Twitch streamers, with its paranoia-infused multiplayer making for a lot of fun and plenty of cross-channel collaborations. It helps that the game’s really cheap at just £4.

The game is built around social deduction, with one or more players being an “imposter”, an alien interloper who has to try and murder their way through the other players as they try to complete tasks. As murdered bodies are discovered, players report them and call a group meeting to bicker, accuse, and potentially kick someone out of an airlock.

We dove into the Nintendo Switch version last December, pondering what it could mean for the game’s future and the problems that Innersloth need to figure out before they can really bring the game to PlayStation or Xbox consoles. There’s a few, such as how chat works in the game. I wrote:

Given how much buzz there is surrounding Among Us, it’s no surprise that Innersloth have sought to bring it to console, and Nintendo Switch is by far and away the most logical first platform for them to tackle. That said, they’ve clearly got their work cut out for them to make it truly feel like a first class citizen on the platform, ironing out the kinks and figuring out how best to translate the game to PlayStation and Xbox.

Why’s it taken so long? Wasn’t this game planned for release in the summer? You would be right about that, but you have to remember that InnerSloth is a thoroughly indie developer. When the game became a smash hit last summer, they had just 5 staff. Now they have double digits, but it’s still a small team. Certainly much, much smaller than Epic Games, who were very obviously inspired by Among Us for a Fortnite game mode (and then took about two months to actually give them any credit).

For people that have been waiting very, very patiently for the long-promised PlayStation and Xbox release to come, I think Xbox’s news post summed this up quite succinctly:

Crewmates!

We’re excited to share the big news that Among Us is coming to Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and with Xbox Game Pass on December 14!

We’re so exci… wait. What was that? I think I heard a vent just ope… Oh god! Is that… an Impostor?!
