Sony is in the spotlight today as it has emerged that the company is being sued by a former PlayStation IT security analyst for gender discrimination and wrongful termination. The lawsuit has been filed by Emma Majo in California, who alleges that the PlayStation division of Sony repeatedly passed over women for promotion and also breached the United States’ Equal Pay Act by not compensating women, and those who identify as women at the same pay rate as men. The entire lawsuit documentation can be read here.

Sony has recently marked the first anniversary of PS5

Emma Majo is also looking to turn the lawsuit into a class action case against Sony so more women who have worked at or are working at Sony can be part of it. Emma has stated that she believes she was terminated for speaking out against gender discrimination while working at Sony, though the official reason is that she was let go due to a department being closed down. Emma states she was never part of the department that was shut down.

It was only late last week that it was reported that PlayStation boss Jim Ryan criticised Activision scandals in internal email stating that Activision “has not done enough to address a deep-seated culture of discrimination and harassment.” Now that Sony is the subject of a lawsuit pertaining to gender discrimination eyes will be on Jim Ryan and the company to see how they react to this serious issue and claim. The games industry is going through a major moment where issues of discrimination and harassment are being brought to light. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick has been accused of knowing about the discriminatory behaviour at the company. Other notable companies that have been accused for discrimination and harassment in the past include Twitch, Ubisoft, Riot Games, and a whole host of others.

Sony has been contacted for comment regarding this lawsuit.
