STALKER 2 will be one of the next games to jump aboard the NFT bandwagon, with GSC Game World making the announcement today. In this move the developer will be partnering with DMarket, a company described as ‘ a platform for trading NFTs and technology for metaverse creation.’ One of the items that will be on offer is the chance to pay to have an NPC made after you in the game, and in this context is being called a metahuman. It is not the first time a game has offered this as a bonus, seen in some Kickstarters, but is the first time an NFT is being used.
“Considering the global trends in gaming, we can do more than just offer an immersive game experience. Our players can get a deeper presence in the game, and we will give them this opportunity by presenting the first AAA game with a unique meta experience,” says Evgeniy Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World.
“Video game developers worldwide are expressing their intentions in using the blockchain and other beneficial technologies while GSC is already there. The company is adding a unique layer and bringing their game to a whole new level into the global Metaverse and Web 3.0 dimension. With the joint efforts of GSC and DMarket, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 will become a game of the future and a game for the community,” says Vlad Panchenko, CEO and co-founder at DMarket.
DMarket is uses Etherium for its NFT tokens, a foundation which is widely for the high energy costs associated with every transaction – there’s an additional “gas” charge that people must pay. There could be a higher costs for GSC, as integrating NFTs into their game means that they fall foul of Steam’s new anti-NFT policy, which bans all NFT games from sale on Steam. Unless they’ve found some kind of loophole – CS:GO and Team Fortress 2 digital items are traded through Dmarket, though they’re not NFT-based – then Valve could hit them with the ban hammer in the coming days.
There’s the question over whether or not NFTs are really needed in order to make this happen. Whoever buys the NFT to become the metahuman will be able to sell it on up until a certain point, after which time they will be added to the game making the NFT worthless once used. This will be part of the first drop with the auction taking place in January. However, that will not be the only drop with GSC Game World confirming that there will be additional STALKER 2 NFT drop in February, but items for that are being kept secret. It has also been announced that items will be tradable on the dmarket site before STALKER 2’s release on 28th April, 2022.
