The Final Fantasy 6 remaster from Square Enix’s Pixel Remaster Collection has been delayed to next year. The game will now launch in February 2022.
Many fans were no doubt hoping to replay the landmark JRPG over the festive period. Final Fantasy and its two sequels were remastered in late July 2021, with Final Fantasy 4 and 5 released just months after.
Each game has had its 2D pixel graphics completely remastered with some stylistic changes, overseen by series veterans. These versions also come with UI and gameplay improvements.
Final Fantasy 6 Remake should be the next game in the series
Here’s what Square Enix has to say about the Final Fantasy 6 delay:
In order to bring you the best experience possible, we’re giving ourselves the necessary time to apply final polish while finishing development on the game.
We’re adding some new items for those that pre-purchase either the game individually, or have purchased the bundle.
We’re looking forward to sharing the final title in our pixel remaster series with you all early next year and we hope you’re looking forward to it.
Right now, the Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection has only been released on PC and mobile devices. Naturally, there have been plenty of fans clamouring for console ports, especially for the Nintendo Switch. However, Square has given no indication that these games will launch on other platforms.
For those who have never played FF6 – or even seen it in action – it’s a bizarre game even by Final Fantasy standards, dialling up every aspect of the beloved JRPG in terms of story, presentation, and enriched gameplay.
An ideal remake for Final Fantasy 6 would see the turn-based combat would remain, yet with some modern flourishes. FF6’s battle system still holds up yet certain aspects could be streamlined, expanded, and sped up. It would also give the developers a chance to rebalance certain characters, making some of the weaker, less popular party members more viable.
