Sony has announced that the online servers for Everybody’s Golf on PS4 will shutdown on 30th September 2022. After that date, there will be decidedly less everybody in the game, as all online features will be lost. Golf with no friends.
The simple statement about this reads:
Online servers for Everybody’s Golf will shut down on 30th September 2022. All online features (including online multiplayer modes) will cease on that date. You will still be able to play and enjoy the game in single-player offline modes.
Everybody’s Golf launched in 2017 and was a huge shake-up for the series. For the first time in the series’ history, this was the name given to the game around the entire world! Goodbye weirdly different-for-the-sake-of-being-different Hot Shots Golf branding in North America! OK, so it’s still called Minna no Golf in Japan, but that’s a straight up translation, so more than sensible.
The game arrived on PS4 with all the usual charm of the series’ easy-going arcade golfing. The familiar slightly cartoony stylings were retained for the graphics, as was the ‘triple tap’ power and swing action, and there was a bevy of content to get to grips with. However, we disliked some of the microtransaction-leaning choices made for the game’s deeply integrated multiplayer.
In our Everybody’s Golf review, Dom wrote:
“In some ways Everybody’s Golf has been well worth the wait. This is still the same gentle and appealing brand of arcade golf that fans have come to know and love, and it’s easy to get caught up in the sheer fun of it all. However, once you venture online you’ll discover that the game is currently deeply unbalanced, with micro-transactions and mobile-esque grinding sapping any sense of competition from proceedings, while asking players to reach for their wallets in order to gain an advantage. In a game that’s supposed to be all about the golfing fun, Sony have categorically found a way to put you firmly in the rough.”
It’s worth remembering that there’s also the VR-only Everybody’s Golf VR which released in 2019. That, however, never had online multiplayer in the first place, so is completely unaffected by this announcement.
