With the PS5 Variable Refresh Rate update rolling out this week, Insomniac Games has started updating their PS5 games to support the new adaptive sync technology. Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man Remastered have both been updated with new 120Hz and VRR graphics modes.
The 120Hz support is actually based on a mode that we’ve seen before with Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: 40FPS Fidelity mode. This maintains the highest graphics fidelity, but lifts the frame rate to 40fps on TVs and monitors that support 120hz. On a 60Hz screen, 40fps would be a horrible juddering mess, but with a 120Hz, the clean subdivision into 40fps means that you can have reduced input latency and a smoother feeling frame rate, without sacrificing resolution or graphics settings like a 60fps performance mode requires.
Alongside this there’s also now VRR. VRR syncs the refresh to when a new frame is ready to be displayed, avoiding jarring stutters and screen tearing. With 120Hz off but VRR on, the two Spider-Man games increase dynamic resolution targets, basically pushing the game engine a bit harder and allowing for performance dips. With 120Hz support and VRR both enabled, they just unlock the frame rate to vary within a range.
Ratchet & Clank is also on the list of games that will be updated to support VRR. The game already has a 40fps mode for when connected to a 120Hz screen, but we can expect to have similar VRR improvements as we now see with the Spider-Man games.
Here’s the patch notes for both Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Spider-Man Remastered.

We gave Spider-Man: Miles Morales 8/10 in our review. “Spider-Man: Miles Morales feels like more of a sequel than it is a stopgap, entangling players within its web of cleverly refined mechanics while delivering some familiar web-slinging thrills,” said Jim. “A heroic technical showcase for PS5 owners picking up their consoles on day one, this meaty side story in the Spider-Man saga has us even more excited than before to see what Insomniac Games have planned next.”
