Humble Games and Witch Beam have announced that their indie game Unpacking will be coming out on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 next week on 10th May.
Unpacking took the indie gaming scene by storm last year, weaving together a wonderfully zen experience of taking things out of boxes and putting them in rooms, and telling the story of someone’s life as they move from house to house. It’s a puzzle game, but it’s one where there’s no “right” answer. You have to find a place for everything to go as you unpack all of the possessions into a living space, whether that’s a single bedroom or through a whole house, but you can express yourself in how you organise everything.
More importantly, these possessions, the domestic environments and the places that you’re moving things into grow to tell a story of a woman’s life, despite you never seeing the character on screen.
The game came out last year across Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch and PC, but now PlayStation gamers are going to get the chance to experience it as well. In our Unpacking review, Steve said:
“Unpacking is real gem that deserves a wide audience. It is short, but the sheer love and care put into the entire game shines through at every turn and the careful balance achieved between freedom and restriction ensures satisfaction without frustration. Add in a wonderfully realised and intimate narrative that makes brilliant use of the values we place upon objects and you have an indie game that should find a place in your collection.”
The game was a contender in our Game of the Year awards last year, getting an honourable mention in the Best Narrative category, but clearly struck home a little harder with other critics, teams and gamers. Most recently, it grabbed the EE Game of the Year award, as voted for by the general public at the 2022 BAFTA Game Awards.
