PlayStation Vita firmware update 3.74 adds PSN restrictions

Sony has released a new PlayStation Vita firmware update today which will prevent users from creating and managing PSN accounts on their handheld system.

PlayStation Vita firmware update 3.74 is now available to download. You’ll need it in order to browse, purchase, and download games from the PSN Store, as well as play online titles that still have a live multiplayer component.

While the new restrictions – outlined below – will be frustrating for a minority of PlayStation gamers, it helps Sony in shoring up account security going forward.

PlayStation Vita Firmware Update 3.74 Patch Notes

Signing in to PlayStation Network now requires a device setup password for enhanced account protection.

Account creation for PlayStation Network and some account management features are no longer available on the console. Use your PC or mobile browser to use account management features with improved performance, speed, and safety.

More than 10 years after the console’s debut, the PlayStation Vita still has a strong fan following. A popular narrative surrounding the system is that it was poorly time – not only was the casual mobile market soaring, there wasn’t as much enthusiasm about PlayStation exclusives as there is today. Sony surprised handheld gamers by halting first party game development, seemingly abandoning it. However, it would be kept afloat by a slew of incredible indies and Japanese imports.

It was only last year that Sony reversed its controversial decision to shut down the PlayStation Store for both PS3 and PS Vita. This would have prevented PSN users from buying games on these systems with a question mark lingering over whether their digital game libraries would be preserved.

It’s hoped that one day PS3 and Vita games will be added to the new-and-improved PlayStation Plus. Launching on June 22, 2022, it will offer three subscription tiers, those more expensive tiers giving you access to more than 400 PlayStation titles.
