Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown delayed to 2023 and last-gen versions cancelled

Lifestyle racing game Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown has been pushed back to 2023 and its PS4 and Xbox One release cancelled as KT Racing push to polish and refine the game as much as best they can. A beta is planned for the not-too-distant future, though.

In a Steam community post, they write, “With so much support from fans of the series, we know many of you will be disappointed, but our goal with Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown is to make it the most polished gaming experience in the franchise by spending more time on its development.”

They later state that “with the aim of making the most of the technology in the latest consoles and maximising the overall quality of the game, NACON has decided to no longer develop Test Drive Unlimited Solar Crown for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.”

This will obviously be a bit disappointing to those not yet able to upgrade, but Nacon and KT Racing have found themselves in a similar situation to Warner Bros. and Gotham Knights. Test Drive Unlimited was announced at Nacon Connect 2020 with initial expectations that they might be shooting for a 2021 release date. That would still have put the game out in the transition between the two console generations, so it would still have made sense to target the last generation. However, even with the difficulties faced in producing enough PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles to meet demands, you could expect there to be well over 40 million, if not 50 million new generation consoles in gamers’ hands by this time next year. At that point, it makes more sense to cut off the legacy coding efforts, allow the game to better use the newer machines, and target the growing audience.

A delay also feels like it was inevitable, because we’ve still not seen even a shred of gameplay! The original announcement was barely more than a teaser trailer, and in mid-2021, KT Racing released a moody head to head’ video, and then a location reveal for the Hong Kong setting.

Hopefully we get to see some kind of gameplay later this year, likely around the time that the game heads into beta testing. Closed beta tests are currently in the works with KT Racing looking to gather a bit of feedback and incorporate that into the game.
