PSVR 2 will have over 20 launch titles, but we still don’t know when that is

Sony expects to have a wide range of over 20 first party and third party games ready for the launch of PlayStation VR2, whenever that might be.

The announcement comes from PlayStation boss Jim Ryan who was speaking as part of a financial call to investors and managed to not talk about his pets.

In the briefing (transcribed by VGC), Ryan said, “Right now, there is a considerable amount of money being spent on partnerships with independent and other third-party developers to secure a considerable pipeline of attractive VR content at the launch of PlayStation VR2.

“That energy, that effort and that money will continue to grow as the installed base of PlayStation VR2 headsets grows also.”

Having been long rumoured and speculated about, with a few leaks along the way, PSVR2 was finally announced in January of this year. That’s been followed by an in-depth reveal of the VR headsets technical specifications, new controllers and the overall design, but no release window has been confirmed for the new headset.

PSVR 2 follows the same philosophy as the original PSVR in terms of how you wear it, with a halo that rings your head and effectively dangles the screen in front of your head. Internally it has high-end VR specs, including 2000×2040 resolution per eye and 90 and 120Hz refresh rates, while there’s new eye tracking, headset feedback and 3D Audio support built in.

That will go hand in hand with the new Sense controllers, which incorporate a lot of the DualSense technology and finally gives us a huge upgrade over the ancient PS Move controllers or clunky use of DualShock 4 with the original headset. You won’t even need a camera to track them, as PSVR2 uses inside-out tracking and connects to the PS5 with a single USB-C cable.

So where will the 20 launch titles come from? Well, Sony has announced Horizon Call of the Mountain, a VR game set within the world of Horizon: Forbidden West, and Samurai Slaughter House has already been announced as a PSVR 2 launch title by its developers. Beyond that, we don’t know… but we can speculate!

PlayStation fans will obviously be hoping that Valve is porting Half-Life: Alyx, while there’s also more niche PC VR games like Carrier Command 2 and Boneworks that could be ported across more easily.

However, we also need to wait and see what Sony’s strategy is for backward compatibility. In theory they could endeavour to support PSVR games on a system level, though given how PS4 games run on PS5, it’s more likely that we’ll see games needing PS5-specific updates. This could lead to already popular games like Beat Saber, the two Moss games, Firewall Zero Hour and a couple others see expanded updates included in the launch lineup.

  1. I’m hoping/praying/fingers crossed that both GT7 and F1 2022 will support PSVR2. There must be a good chance with GT7 as Sport has a VR mode, although I’m hoping that it will be the entire game, and as it’s been announced that the pc version of F1 2022 will be playable in VR a port to Sony’s new HMD isn’t that big of a leap. Fingers and everything else well and truly crossed.

    • They’ve already said no to F1 2022 having VR. Or at least “no plans” for PSVR2 support. GT7 seems more likely, but after the half-arsed VR support in GT Sport, who knows?

  2. What are the chances of PSVR 2 working on PC?

    • Officially? Probably close to zero. Unofficially? Give someone a couple of weeks. Sounds like it’ll be easier to do than the first one was, with just a single cable.

      • Yeah, there’s already jury-rigged drivers that can (though I never managed to get it working) get the original PSVR to work on PC. PSVR2 support will get hacked together in no time at all.
