With the big reveal of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, Activision has also confirmed a few details about Warzone 2.0, a reboot of the hugely successful free-to-play battle royale that will launch “soon” after MWII.
Today’s #Warzone will continue on as a separate experience and will include a continuation of player progression and inventories within that Warzone experience.
Plus, a new Warzone experience is in development for mobile. So, be ready for more to come on the #Warzone front soon!

The Call of Duty twitter account gives the rundown of what this means. The new Warzone – dubbed Warzone 2.0 – will launch as an extension of the Modern Warfare II universe, much like the original Warzone did in early 2020. However, in contrast to the last few Call of Duty releases, though, this will be a completely new game to download, as opposed to an update and addition of content to the existing game.
Warzone 2.0 will be a “state-of-the-art experience” and feature “new content and systems with new progression & inventories”. In other words, it’s a completely blank new slate for the combined studios of Activision to work with.
One important thing to note is that the original Warzone won’t be shut down or truly supplanted. It’s likely that it will stop receiving major seasonal content drops, but it will continue to exist as “a separate experience”.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II has been revealed, a reimagining of the hugely popular 2009 original and sequel to the 2019 series reboot. The game will come with a sweeping new single player campaign, with tons of over-the-top set pieces that will include underwater combat, explosive assaults from 30,000 feet and tense stealth missions.
It will be joined by a new COD multiplayer and a returning “evolved” Spec Ops co-op mode that will have your squad taking on advanced AI in top-secret missions.
It’s all built on a new iteration of Infinity Ward’s in-house game engine, featuring photogrammetry, a new hybrid asset streaming system, physically-based water rendering, world volumetric lighting, 4K HDR and more. It sounds like it’ll be a real workout for your PS5 or Xbox Series X!
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II will be out on 28th October 2022 across PlayStation, Xbox and PC.
