Summer Games Fest continues with the first footage of The Callisto Protocol, the game that is being created by Glen Schofield, the chap who dreamt up Dead Space.

There’s no easy way of putting this so here we go: It’s Dead Space. Grubbly mutated humans, energy indicators on the back of the character, dark corridors on some remote space ship or station, even the head stomp is back. It’s Dead Space. That’s not a bad thing, a new Dead Space from the team who made the fantastic first game is most welcome but I was hoping for something a little original. Check out the trailer.

The setting of The Callisto Protocol is as follows:

Set on Jupiter’s “dead moon” Callisto in 2320, The Callisto Protocol is the story of Jacob Lee, an inmate at Black Iron Prison who must fight for his life when a mysterious outbreak throws the moon into chaos. Prison guards and inmates are mutating into monstrous creatures called Biophage, and Jacob must battle to survive the horrors of Black Iron and uncover the dark secrets of the United Jupiter Company.

So, it turns out that the game is on track for a 2022 release date, despite having not really been seen since its original announcement. In the meantime EA has got the hype train for their Dead Space remake rolling, with developer Motive Studios hosting regular game streams to show progress. That game is expected in early 2023, so Callisto Protocol will get out the door first on 2nd December 2022.

The game was orginally meant to be part of the PUBG universe and Striking Distance Studios was specifically created in order to expand the PUBG universe with a narrative game, but that’s tricky when it’s blasting off into a sci-fi future and throwing alien monstrosities in your face, with no obvious connection to the original PUBG setting.

Even when the game was announced, Schofield admitted in an IGN interview that he already had the concept for The Callisto Protocol in mind before joining PUBG publisher Krafton, and they had to find a way to fit his idea into their universe. In other words, it was probably about as connected as the various films that are slapped together in the Cloverfield series of films.
