Devolver Digital and revealed The Plucky Squire in their typically bizarre Summer Game Fest stream, surprisingly coming out with something that looks simply lovely as it jumps back and forth between 2D and 3D worlds. The Plucky Squire is coming to PS5, Xbox Series, Switch and PC in 2023.
Here’s a little bit of blurb to tell you what the game is about:
The Plucky Squire follows the magical adventures of Jot and his friends – storybook characters who discover a three-dimensional world outside the pages of their book. When the malevolent Humgrump realizes he’s the villain of the book – destined to lose his battle against the forces of good for all eternity – he kicks the heroic Jot out of its pages and changes the story forever.
Jump between 2D and 3D worlds in this charming action adventure – solving puzzles, boxing badgers, flying with a jetpack, and enjoying many more delightful and surprising mini challenges as you become the hero of a living storybook.
If you’ve been paying attention to Devolver Digital for the last few years, you might recognise the art style of The Swords of Ditto in the 2D segments, and there’s a very good reason for that. This game is coming from Bidds, who’s now no longer of One Bit Beyond, but a part of All Possible Futures alongside former Pokémon designer James Turner. As someone who’s always enjoyed Bidds’ games, I’m very excited to see his return!

Looking back on The Swords of Ditto, it didn’t have the most amazing launch, but Devolver and Bidds stuck with the game and expanded it with the Mormo’s Curse update. This also saw the game coming to Nintendo Switch. Returning to the game after its updated Switch release, I said:
“That Devolver and One Bit Beyond have stuck with this game and continued to evolve it is a credit to them both. Because of that, The Swords of Ditto has matured, it’s grown, and it’s kept and even added to the original charm and style. It’s still a bit of a slow burn to get started with, but the changes made in Mormo’s Curse have made it a much better game now than it was a year ago.”
