Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak brings the jungle, unique monsters and more!

We love not E3 don’t we? It’s almost like being crushed into a great big events hall in Los Angeles without leaving the safety and comfort of your won home. Thankfully the information is still flowing today, and Capcom have dropped a bunch of new details for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak ahead of its release on the 30th of June.

First and foremost is the information that the Jungle locale is the returning area. It’s a glorious beachfront location with ancient ruins and a central mountain to clamber to the top of. Long-time players will remember it from Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. It’s always been one of those locations that’s stuck with me over the years so it’s great to see it return.

Next up was a look at some of the monsters you can expect to bludgeon to death, with Espinas the first on the block. This spiky dragon – its name means ‘thorns’ in Spanish! – joins the hunt from Monster Hunter Frontier. This was a Japanese Xbox 360 and PC title so it’s safe to say that not many in the West will have faced off against it. Next up was Monster Hunter 4’s key monster the Gore Magala. This tough and terrifying sightless dragon uses its wing membranes to sense prey. Its horns change form when in frenzy stage while it uses its claws as an anchor for powerful attacks. Believe me it’s brutal.

There were a couple of other monsters shown off too, with the Daimyu Hermitaur and the Pyre Rakna-Kadaki adding another returning monster and a new fiery variant to cause terror in hunters everywhere. Or not, as the case may be.

Capcom have promised a raft of free updates for Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, and these are looking as substantial as we’ve come to expect from these over the years. Its remarkable just how far they go for these, especially when some companies would make you pay for them. The first update is coming in August, and brings with it the Lucent Nargacuga and the returning Forlorn Arena area. This will then be follwoed up in the Fall and the Winter updates, both of which will drop even more monsters into your lap.

Finally, if you’re on the fence about joining in the hunt, there’s going to be a Sunbreak demo going live on the 15th of June for both Nintendo Switch and PC. This demo will let you go face to face with Malzeno, the cover monster for Sunbreak, as well as the good old Tetranadon and Great Izuchi. There’s also some tutorial quests for those newcomers, and if you want to get a grip on the new skills every hunter has gained. This includes the all new Switch Skills, which let you swap out different moves and combos on the fly.

Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak releases for PC and Nintendo Switch on the 30th of June. Please note, you need the base Monster Hunter Rise game to play it, and have completed the main questline as well. You’d best get started now.
