A developer diary for One Piece Odyssey has been released by Bandai Namco in which producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki reveals some details about the game. One of those details is that One Piece Odyssey has been in development for the last five years, while work on One Piece Pirate Warriors 4 was also taking place.

The One Piece Odyssey dev diary also reveals that Eiichiro Oda was impressed with what he was seeing, leading to the creation of two new characters for the game. Those characters are Adio and Lim. New creatures have also been designed for the game including the Leviathan and Dry Penguin. The island of Waford is where the game takes place, with it having been designed exclusively for One Piece Odyssey. Everything about the island has been influenced the the wider One Piece world, and that includes the clouds in the game’s sky.

During the game players will be able to switch between the different members of the Straw Hat Crew to take advantage of their unique abilities while traversing the island. Luffy’s unique ability is to use his stretchy arms to reach different areas of the map, Zoro can cut through obstacles, and Chopper can travel through small areas. The battle system is a classic turn based one to allow players to use unique abilities of the crew. There are Scramble Battle Areas in which several battles go on at once with crew members assigned to different enemy groups. Some battles have Dramatic Scenes in which random elements can take place, such as an enemy being more powerful due to the time of day or someone being unable to attack.

One Piece Odyssey is expected to release this year with the confirmed platforms being PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. A release date is to be confirmed.
