What We Played #560 – Stray, As Dusk Falls & Halo Infinite co-op

Stray PS5
Stray PS5

It’s already starting to feel like a distant memory, but the first part of this week was anything but a gamer’s paradise. It’s a commonly agreed fact that staying in and playing games is the perfect way to escape the worries of the world, but when those worries are pushing the indoor temperature above 30ºC for anyone that doesn’t have air-con, and when your PS5, Xbox Series X|S and everything else will only make it hotter? Yeah, it’s probably best to keep them turned off… Heck, they might turn themselves off if they get too hot!

Even so, I braved the soaring afternoon temperatures in my west-facing gaming room for a preview which you’ll get to see next week. And as the cooler air rolled in, I got to playing the Forza Horizon 5 Hot Wheels DLC, played a little of As Dusk Falls with Nick, and returned to Halo Infinite to check out the co-op campaign with Dom – it’s a lot of fun! The one thing I haven’t played? That kitty cat game everyone else has!

Aran’s been playing more of Horizon Forbidden West, continuing to ignore the main quest lines as he simply explores the world. Meanwhile, Nic B has dragged himself up to Master Rank 50 in Monster Hunter Rise, doing so at times when his office wasn’t 35ºC!

Monster Hunter Rise Sunbreak Lunagaron

Gamoc had no such troubles, it seems, as he managed to play more of the “massive and phenomenal (if a bit buggy)” Pathfinder Kingmaker. He also got in Batman: Arkham Asylum, Assassin’s Creed Ezio Collection (specifically AC2), Crusader Kings 3, which is “addictive and weird.” He also played a bit of Stray, which is “rather good and pretty.”

Nick P was on hand for our review of As Dusk Falls, the crime drama narrative adventure that he absolutely loved playing through. He’s also gone back to The Quarry and is playing Cyberpunk 2077 again, just trying to get that finished. He’s supplemented that to his usual Dead by Daylight, and is soon to start playing VHS, which is a bit like DBD, but set in the 80s.

As Dusk Falls Review Decision

Reuben has mostly been playing through Live A Live for our review, which he described as “a really interesting little game and one I’ve had so much fun with.” Alongside that he finished off Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order at long last, and has been ploughing his way through the enemy hordes in Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes.

Keeping himself mentally cool, Steve has been playing a whole lot of PowerWash Simulator, “which is far better than it has any right to be.” He switched to couch gaming (after a rather violent sounding cough gave him muscle strain) for Klonoa Phantasy Reverie, Dodgeball Academia and Last Kids on Earth with his son. Stray’s on his weekend playlist, it sounds like.

Miguel got in a mixture of Dusk Diver 2, Frogun, Apex Legends, and hopping between Monster Hunter Rise and a replay of Monster Hunter Stories 2. He also got in some time with what he claims is “the best Final Fantasy ever made”. Apparently that’s Strangers of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins.

Stray review Exploration

Johnny-come-lately Tuffcub played his usual Destiny 2, with Capcom Aracade Stadium 2 and handled our review of Stray alongside. Similarly belated, Ade grabbed his partner to play Stray, saying it’s “Purfect. It’s the Cat’s Whiskers. It’s the Meowst fun I’ve had with a game in ages. etc. etc.”

And finally, Dom’s smashed together Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, Dorfromantik and Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes in his week of gaming.

Now then, what have you played? And do you have any cat puns?

I'm probably wearing toe shoes, and there's nothing you can do to stop me!

  1. I spent the early part of the week melting completely in the heat and not doing much at all other than the day job, sweating and repeatedly telling myself it’d cool down soon, which was something of a cat-astrophe for my gaming! I did play more Lego Star Wars Clone Wars and I’m hoping to wrap that up with the platinum this weekend – which would be purr-fect! I’ll just have to stay paw-sitive for that, but with the right cat-itude anything is paw-sible!

    • You get one weird cat thumbs up meme.

  2. So yes, it was too hot to start the week. I think we hit about 37 here. The PS5 was definitely struggling. Actually heard the fans going.

Carried on with the various things from the last few weeks (thanks PS+). Did a second playthrough of Man of Medan, and ended up with a slightly lower death count. Then started Little Hope. Which is an improvement. Not that Man of Medan wasn’t good. Another run of that to do, I think. And the 3rd game is on sale for a bargain price at the moment, so who knows…?

Apart from that and 18 other things from the past month, there was that PS+ cat game. Not sure quite what all the fuss is about. It’s decent enough. It looks very nice. Sounds good (could do with a bit more of the classic Bladerunner CS-80 aftertouch thing though – if anyone even knows what that is). But gameplay is a bit lacking. Linear bits, then bigger open bits where you accidentally find where you’re supposed to be after too long. And the terrible “press X to jump, but only in the exact right spots” thing is annoying.

Did find the secret hidden feature (which may only work if you’re playing it with a loud surround sound system and the windows open). “Press O to make every dog within 100 metres bark”
