Hellblade 2 will feature “location accurate” poop

Ninja Theory would like us to know that they have been working really hard on poop, specifically the droppings from birds that congregate on the cliffs found in the game. “Achieving a high level of realism from reference material is extremely important to us. That even includes location accurate bird poop,” they tweeted along with a video detailing the avian excretion.

It is unclear how many players will appreciate this level of detail but I would guess it would be close to zero. I’m sure the rest of the game will be excellent but you do have to wonder why Ninja Theory would put time and effort, and indeed boast about, such a detail. Perhaps the answer is “Microsoft gave us lots of money“.

The last time we heard anything about Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II was at Chritmast 2021 when a trailer was released.

Previously in June 2021  the team were building a vertical slice demo that will set the foundations for the rest of the game experience when they go into full production. The game has now been in production for three years having been announced way back at The Game Awards in December 2019. Since then Ninja Theory has been doing a lot of pre-production work. That has included sending their art and audio teams to Iceland – the game is set in 9th century Iceland – to capture sounds and photogrammetry for the world. This will then be combined with satellite data to recreate the country in-game.

That detail extends to the costumes, which are being made in real life and then scanned in, while Ninja Theory are collaborating with Unreal Engine makers Epic Games on enhancing all their character models and animations even further.

And they want the combat in the game to be as gritty and realistic as possible. To that end, Senua’s actress Melina Juergens has been in combat training for years to be able to provide her own performance capture, and the animation team has also had combat training to get the right feel.
