The BioShock movie is alive and well at Netflix, with the streaming company apparently getting Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence to report, Deadline reports. It was back in February that Netflix had announced it was developing the BioShock movie. This is in partnership with 2K Games and Take Two. Michael Green is also apparently on board to work on the script.

Francis Lawrence has also directed films like I Am Legend, Constantine, Red Sparrow, and the upcoming The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Michael Green has worked on projects like Logan, Blade Runner 2049, Jungle Cruise, Green Lantern, Heroes, and American Gods. So both have experience with big name IPs. The BioShock movie has been in development hell. Back in 2009 Gore Verbinski was directing and Universal was the studio. However, Universal pulled the plug as they wanted the budget slashed and the movie to be a more family friendly rating, whereas Verbinski wanted an R rated movie.

“We were eight weeks prior shooting when the plug was pulled,” recalled Verbinski back in 2017. “It’s an R rated movie. I wanted to keep it R rated, I felt like that would be appropriate, and it’s an expensive movie. It’s a massive world we’re creating and it’s not a world we can simply go to locations to shoot. So I think the combination of the price tag and the rating, universal just didn’t feel comfortable ultimately. At that time also there were some R rated, expensive R rated movies that were not working.”

A release date for the BioShock movie has not been confirmed and nor has any casting been announced for the BioShock movie. That means it will take time for Netflix to get the movie ready and up on its streaming service.
