Microsoft – yes, Microsoft and not Sony – have seemingly revealed that Marvel’s Wolverine, a PlayStation exclusive title, will be released next year.  The leak comes from a document submitted by Microsoft as part of the investigation by the CMA into  Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard.

Wolverine release date

The document also references Spider-Man 2, Horizon (presumably the PlayStation VR title,  Horizon VR: Call of the Mountain but possibly a remaster of the first game) Final Fantasy XVI and Forespoken, all of which are confirmed to release in 2023.  Wolverine is the only game without a release date.  The document is part of a legal investigation so should be factually correct.

In fact we know very little about Marvel’s Wolverine. It was announced in September 2021 with Insomniac Games on development duties. Walt D. Williams will be the story lead over at Insomniac Games, for those who don’t recognise the name, Williams worked as narrative director on 2012’s controversial Spec Ops: The Line.

The game is directed by Brian Horton (as creative director) and Cameron Christian (as game director). Horton has said the game will be “full size, mature tone”. The trailer shows Logan having a drinking at the Princess Bar in Madripoor so that maybe be the location.

Marvel’s Wolverine PS5: characters, story, and gameplay predictions

“In the vein of our Spider-Man games, our goal here is to not only respect the DNA of what makes the character so popular, but also look for opportunities to make it feel fresh and truly reflect the Insomniac spirit. Even though Marvel’s Wolverine is very early in development, from what I’ve seen of its emotional narrative and cutting-edge gameplay (see what I did there?), the team is already creating something truly special,” said Ryan Schneider, Head of Franchise Strategy & Studio Relations at Insomniac Games.

“Being able to build a new, original universe with Spider-Man and now Wolverine is such an honor for so many of us at Insomniac Games. A huge thanks to our Sony Interactive Entertainment family for giving us the opportunity to develop these games, Marvel for trusting us with characters that mean so much to so many people, and of course, our fans for continuing to believe in us.”
