Discord Voice now works directly on your Xbox without a phone

Discord’s integration onto Xbox consoles has been updated so that it now works directly from the Xbox Guide menu. This means you no longer need to use a mobile app to transfer a voice chat from Discord to your Xbox Series X|S or Xbox One. Simplicity!

The new way to join a Discord Voice Chat is simple:

  • On your Xbox dashboard, press the Guide button
  • Scroll to Parties & chats, and select Discord “Join a Voice channel”
  • Scroll through the list of your available Discord servers and voice channels and pick one to join on console

You’ll even be able to see a little preview of who else is in a specific voice channel with avatar icons showing.

Discord Xbox

Discord on Xbox no longer needs a phone.

Of course, you will first need to have linked your Discord and Xbox accounts to enable the integration. You’ll also need to join servers and set up friend groups on Discord using the app or website, and Discord on Xbox is only for voice chat – you won’t get to see all the text chat channels.

The Discord Voice feature was announced and went into testing back in July before progressing through to full public availability in September, meaning that Xbox, PC and mobile users can all chat together. Initially you needed a mobile app in order to send voice chat connections to the Xbox, but that’s been removed.

This was easily one of the most-requested features of the last few years, as Discord has risen to become the go-to voice and text chat platform for gamers. Previously Xbox users would have had to either play with Windows 10/11 gamers willing to use the Xbox party chat system on PC, rely on in-game voice chat solutions, or go through the awkward hoop of chatting on phone while gaming on console.

It’s quite likely that Discord Voice will enable truly cross-platform chat in the not too distant future – it was rumoured in the last few months. Sony invested heavily within Discord in May 2021 and potentially staved off a buyout by Microsoft (who were rumoured to be lining up a $10 billion acquisition offer). With that investment, Discord and Sony quickly brought some integrations to the platform, and it wouldn’t have been crazy speculation to think that deep Xbox integration was then less likely, if not completely off the table. Of course, Xbox has managed to get there first this time, but here’s hoping that PlayStation isn’t far behind.
