Sony has announced the PS Plus free monthly games for January 2023, and they’re kicking the year off with three big games. This includes Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, just in time for people to catch up on the story ahead of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s release in March 2023.
What will the PS Plus January 2023 games be?
As was leaked last week by the ever-reliable billbil-kun, a member of French deals site Dealabs, the three games are:
- Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order (PS5 | PS4)
- Fallout 76 (PS4)
- Axiom Verge 2 (PS5 | PS4)
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order being part of the line up is a nice surprise, and will allow those who are looking forward to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor experience the beginning of Cal Kestis’ own story. It would be perfect timing to play through Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order as Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will be released 17th March 2023.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a great new series in the pantheon of Star Wars games, adopting certain principles from the Souls-like subgenre of action RPG, while introducing new characters and telling a story of a young Jedi Padawan rediscovering his powers. Many will have already played this game, but if you’ve not done so, or need a nudge to check the game out after its free PS5 upgrade, then this is a good inclusion.
In our review for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, Jim wrote:
“Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is exactly the kind of single player game we had originally hoped to see when EA and Disney joined forces. Even if you strip away the license, you’re left with a super satisfying mix or combat, story, and exploration, deftly crafted by a studio best known for spearheading an entirely different genre.”
Fallout 76 was first released in 2018 and did not have a smooth launch, being widely panned by critics and fans alike. Since that time, Bethesda has worked on changes for Fallout 76, with major expansions adding new story arcs, characters, as well as removal of some modes like the killing off the Nuclear Winter battle royale mode. Appearing on PS Plus could breathe new life into the more multiplayer aspects of the game, though this can still be enjoyed as more of a solo experience.
Axiom Verge 2 was released in 2021, but the PS5 release only came in August this year. The side scrolling action adventure metroidvania. The story follows Indra Chaudhari who is reconstructed after dying to find out what happened to Hammond and their research team. There will be a lot of danger as it becomes clear that this team was targeted.
Can I still download the December 2022 PlayStation Plus Games?
Absolutely! The PlayStation Plus games for December includes the Mass Effect Legendary Edition trilogy remaster, action RPG Biomutant and the newly released Divine Knockout. All three are available to grab right up until the December games are made available.
What’s with the whole PlayStation Plus relaunch?
The PlayStation Plus relaunch took place back in the middle of 2022, transforming the PS Plus we once knew into a three tiered subscription service that bundles in and expands what was once PlayStation Now. The classic PS Plus is now called PS Plus Essential, giving access to online multiplayer gaming, cloud save backups, exclusive offers and at least 2 free monthly games. PS Plus Extra then adds a catalogue of PS4 and PS5 games into the mix, while PS Plus Deluxe and Premium (depending on your region) adds older PS2, PS1 and PSP game emulation, and game streaming for PS3 and other titles.
