Last year the legendary horror director John Carpenter said he would really like to make a Dead Space movie. The internet span that out to make it a fact, but that is not true and he has clarified his position in an interview with Variety.
However, he also seems to suggest that there is a Dead Space movie in the works. Here is the section from the Variety interview.
You’ve spoken recently about directing a “Dead Space” movie. Is there any movement on that?
No, no, no. I can’t believe how that spread. I’m a big video game fan, so I played all the games. I was down looking at the new digital cameras, the RED, and happened to mention to them that I would love to do a “Dead Space” film. That just went around, and everybody said, “Oh, when are you gonna do it?” I’m not gonna do it. I think they already have another director involved. And they haven’t asked me to do it. So until someone asks me, I wouldn’t do it. But there’s a new version of the “Dead Space” video game coming out in January, and I’m there.
So as you can see he does say “I think they already have another director involved”, which is odd as a Dead Space movie has not been announced. Well, not recently.
There was a film in production and it was announced back in 2010 and with DJ Caruso attached as director. It was revealed that the Dead Space movie was to be a prequel to the games. Fast forward to 2013 and the project had stalled and EA took the movie in house with “Europa Report” scribe Philip Gelatt rewriting the script.
“You would be making ‘Event Horizon’ or ‘Alien,’” said Justin Marks of EA at the time. “I’ve already seen that movie.” Instead, the challenge is to tell the main character’s story in a way “that’s new and intriguing.”
However, Dead Space 3 flopped rather badly and the movie was seemingly cancelled, although no official announcement was ever made. With the Dead Space remake on the way perhaps Hollywood has taken interest once again.
