The Last of Us Season 2 confirmed by HBO

The Last of Us has been a massive hit for HBO, so it’s no surprise that they have confirmed Season 2 ahead of the third episode airing this weekend.

Don’t get excited about another five or six season epic, though, because it looks like even if it’s a hit, there won’t be too many series of The Last of Us on HBO. “We have no plans to tell any stories beyond adapting the games,” Neil Druckmann told The Hollywood Reporter. “We won’t run into the same issue as Game of Thrones since Part II doesn’t end on a cliffhanger.”

There’s some suggestions that developer Naughty Dog are continuing to explore the universe. The studio has moved on from the Uncharted series, but has a The Last of Us multiplayer game in the works, and there’s fresh reports that a The Last of Us Part 3 might also be in the pipeline. At some point this year we expect to see more of Naughty Dog’s standalone multiplayer experience set in the TLOU universe after recently sharing some concept art.

The first series of the TV show follows the plot of the first game, albeit with a few twists when the duo meet hard-core survivalist Bill, and if greenlit, it seems the second series will follow the second game. A third game seems a good way off, “I think there’s more story to tell,”  says Druckmman, but that would have to be out by 2025 if the TV show were to get a third series.

“I don’t have any interest in a spinning-plates-go-on-forever show,”  says  ‘Chernobyl’ creator Craig Mazin, “When it becomes a perpetual motion machine, it just can’t help but get kind of … stupid. Endings mean everything to me.”

How can you watch The Last of Us?

To watch the full The Last of Us series, you’ll need to subscribe to HBO or (in the UK) to Sky TV or Now TV, but what if you just want a taste? Well, the news of The Last of Us Season 2 comes on the same day that HBO and SkyTV have uploaded The Last of Us Episode 1 for free on YouTube, making it readily available for anyone with a basic internet connection to watch the opening to this record-setting video game adaptation.

The video has been uploaded to both SkyTV and HBO’s YouTube channels, and can be watched without a subscription to Sky or NowTV in the UK or HBO in the US and other regions. We’ve embedded it here, though it is age-restricted:

Is The Last of Us worth watching?

Absolutely! It’s still early doors for the HBO long-awaited TV adaptation, with just two episodes released so far, though critics (some of whom have had access to the entire series) have been mostly glowing in their reviews. In our own impressions we wrote:

It’s a strong first showing and one that holds plenty of easter eggs and tiny details The Last of Us fans have already been analysing. There are also elements we haven’t touched upon, including certain side characters, the incredible set designs, and soundtrack, all of which mesh together in a way that feels wholly authentic to the TLOU universe.

There’s been a real buzz surrounding the show, with fans of the original video game tuning in to see how well it’s been adapted, and non-gamers eager for a new big-budget TV show also diving into the world for the first time. The response to the first episode was so overwhelmingly positive that HBO has been able to tout record growth in viewership, with the second episode getting 5.7 million viewers, up 22% on the first episode.
