Nintendo Switch Online adds four retro games in March 2023 library update

Nintendo has revealed the March Game Update for Nintendo Switch Online’s collection of Game Boy, NES and SNES games. The standout here is Kirby’s Dream Land 2, but don’t let that game stop you from also checking out the more… unusual games that Nintendo has added.

The four new games are:

  • BurgerTime Deluxe (GB)
  • Kirby’s Dream Land 2 (GB)
  • Xevious (NES)
  • Side Pocket (SNES)

All are available as part of the standard Nintendo Switch Online tier – the platforms behind the higher priced Expansion Pack tier are N64, Game Boy Advance and Mega Drive.

The addition of Kirby’s Dream Land 2 means that the whole Dark Matter trilogy is now available via Switch Online, and comes alongside a bit of a resurgence in the franchise – a Kirby-naissance?  – after last year’s Kirby and the Forgotten Land and this year’s enhanced port of the Nintendo Wii’s Return to Dream Land.

Alongside that you’ve got the strange chef ’em up of BurgerTime Deluxe, SNES golf game Side Pocket and NES shoot ’em up Xevious.

Game Boy games were added to Switch Online in February. The emulator means you can play with Game Boy, Game Boy Pocket or Game Boy Color screen filters to get the visual style you like on the Nintendo Switch screen. The games also support two player multiplayer locally and online via Nintendo Switch Online.

The current lineup of Game Boy games include:

  • Tetris
  • Super Mario Land 2 – 6 Golden Coins
  • The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
  • Gargoyle’s Quest
  • Game & Watch Gallery 3
  • Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare
  • Metroid II – Return of Samus
  • Wario Land 3
  • Kirby’s Dream Land
  • Kirby’s Dream Land 2

Confirmed for future updates are:

  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons
  • The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages
  • Pokémon Trading Card Game
  • Kirby Tilt ‘n’ Tumble
