Street Fighter movie and TV series officially confirmed

Capcom has announced that it has partnered with Legendary Entertainment to create a new live action Street Fighter movie, as well as a TV series based on the franchise. At the moment, production is in very early stages with no director, producers, or cast yet confirmed for either the movie or series. It is also not known which will come first, whether the series will lead into the movie or vice versa.

The Street Fighter is no stranger to either silver screen or TV screen. In 1994, the Street Fighter movie starring the likes of Jean Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia, Ming-Na Wen, and Kylie Minogue was released, with a very mixed reception. In 2009, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li starring Kristin Kreuk was released, and was not a critical success. There have been mini-series too such as Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist and Street Fighter: Resurrection. There was also an animated series that ran from 1995 to 1997.

In a statement, Capcom wrote, “Capcom seeks to enhance its brands via its Single Content Multiple Usage strategy to further bolster worldwide sales in its core home video game software business. The company strongly believes that adapting its game content into movies and television shows provides opportunities to build awareness of its brands with a wide audience that extends beyond the game market. In working with Legendary, which boasts a track record of numerous hit films, Capcom aims to further enhance the value of its IPs throughout the globe.”

Capcom is no stranger to having movies based on its games. There have been the Resident Evil movies as well as the Netflix series. There was also the Monster Hunter movie. It is not known yet whether the movie and TV series will directly link to Street Fighter 6, or if these will be an unconnected story and universe. Street Fighter 6 will be released on June 2nd.
