Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 new story trailer gives us a first look at Venom

Insomniac popped by San Diego Comic Con yesterday for to host a panel for their upcoming PS5 superhero sequel Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. The new story trailer is all about Kraven as one new antagonist, Venom, the alien symbiote that has become an iconic part of the Spider-Man story, and the shared story of Peter Parker and Miles Morales.

The trailer gives us a first look at how Venom will appear in the game as a standalone villain, having previously seen Venom as a suit for Peter Parker in the gameplay reveal in May, though we also see some of the personal troubles our two heroes are going through, how Peter’s personality is affected by the symbiote, and Kraven’s arrival in New York on a mysterious hunt.

Senior Narrative Director Jon Paquette said, “At the beginning of our story, our Spider-Men are at the top of their game, but both Peter Parker and Miles Morales are struggling with their personal lives. Miles is trying to find time to write his college entrance essay, but he keeps procrastinating and focusing on Spider-Work instead. Meanwhile, Peter is underwater on payments for Aunt May’s house, but he can’t sell, it means too much to him. And just like Miles, Peter tries (and fails) to find balance with so many responsibilities. MJ wants to help Pete with the mortgage, but her job is on the line now that J. Jonah Jameson is back at the Bugle and looking to clean house. Our heroes have arrived at a confluence of crossroads, with uncertain futures, and some tough decisions ahead.”

Further to the story elements, Insomniac opened up about some other new game elements. There’s new gear and abilities, including Peter’s Spider-Arms and new Symbiote powers, while Miles now has two forms of bioelectric Venom to every fight. Add to that new Spider-Gadgets like the Web Grabber, and there’s plenty of new possibilities in combat.

The world is growing, too, swinging across the East River to let you explore Brooklyn and Queens, while you might have to hop onto a ferry to reach Coney Island. Exploring the world will be enhanced with Web Wings.

Senior Game Director Ryan Smith explained, “We are really excited for people to try out the Web Wings. For us it was a cool opportunity to bring something people have seen in comics and movies and integrate it in the game. Swinging is the core of our Spider-Man traversal, so we designed the Web Wings to work with swinging and complement it. That way you can weave back and forth between the two to build up speed and height. When you use the Web Wings with our wind tunnels, though, that’s one of the ways to go across the city super-fast and really push the speed of traversal, which was one of our goals. Thanks to the power and speed of the PS5, Web Wings, add another layer to our traversal system and change up how you look at getting around the different parts of the city.”

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is coming out exclusively for PlayStation 5 on 20th October 2023.

Spider-Man was a great game on PS4 and has been remastered for PS5 alongside the release of Spider-Man: Miles Morales.

We gave Spider-Man: Miles Morales a great 8/10 in our review. “Spider-Man: Miles Morales feels like more of a sequel than it is a stopgap, entangling players within its web of cleverly refined mechanics while delivering some familiar web-slinging thrills,” said Jim. “A heroic technical showcase for PS5 owners picking up their consoles on day one, this meaty side story in the Spider-Man saga has us even more excited than before to see what Insomniac Games have planned next.”
