This year’s instalment of the Call of Duty franchise will be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 and it features Captain Price again. We know this because energy drink firm Monster will be running a promotion for the game and pictures of the carboard boxes for the drink have found there way on the internet.

As spotted on Twitter, Algebra Sloth found the offending drinks can boxes:

Modern Warfare 3 Leak on Twitter

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 was originally released in 2011 and was a direct sequel to the 2009 game Modern Warfare 2. Presumably this new version will follow on from the most recent version of of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the 2022 one. This whole Modern Warfare reboot thing has been pretty daft, hasn’t it?

A few months ago, most people would have been expecting for another Call of Duty brand to take over, whether that was Black Ops or something from Sledgehammer, with the series having bounced its yearly entries between development teams ever since the mid-2000s. However, there have been other reports that Call of Duty would be taking a year off, as Activision has effectively turned into a singularly focussed Call of Duty pipeline over the last decade. So what’s going on with Modern Warfare III?

Well, it’s kind of a mixture of all of the above, it seems. Rumours have emerged over the last few weeks that Modern Warfare 3 is actually a year update DLC that has expanded into being a full game. In a curious twist of fate, it’s reportedly Sledgehammer leading development on this one, just to they did for the original Modern Warfare 3 after half of Infinity Ward followed the studio’s founders over to Respawn.

However, don’t expect a totally fresh start on this one. As we’ve seen in recent years, there’s often been continuity from one Call of Duty to the next, primarily through the Warzone battle royale game and the many progression unlocks that it ties into. Modern Warfare 3 is set to be more extensive than that, with some holdover and common ground with Modern Warfare 2.

At least, that’s what all the rumours are saying. Stay tuned for Activision to give this a proper announcement sometime in the next month or so.

Seems that energy drinks company have sweetened to the idea of video games when there’s massive amounts of cross-promotional money to be made…

Looking back on last year’s game, Nick said in our Modern Warfare 2 review: “There’s some rough edges to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II that keep it from hitting the heights of the 2019 Modern Warfare, though most of its flaws can and will be fixed or improved through patches. Still, there’s an action-packed story to play through, plenty of multiplayer and a light co-op mode, and the promise of more in future. With Warzone 2.0 just around the corner, the future is certainly bright for Modern Warfare 2.”
