Baldur’s Gate 3 confirmed for Xbox Series X|S, drops Series S splitscreen co-op

Baldur’s Gates 3 has been a massive success on PC and it looks like the PlayStation 5 version will also be a big hit, but what about Xbox players? The good news is that the game is now confirmed for Series X|S, but with one caveat. The Series S version will not have splitscreen co-op, but will include cross-save with Steam.

The breakthrough has come from Larian’s Swen Vincke who spoke to Xbox’s Phil Spencer at Gamescom and managed to thrash out the deal to only have splitscreen on the Series X. If you were not aware, Microsoft have what was up until now a very hard rule that the only difference between a Series X and Series S game would be the resolution, developers were not allowed to cut features from the lower spec console.

The news of an Xbox version was hinted at by just yesterday Phil Spencer in an interview with Eurogamer.

“On S, specifically, we designed the box with similarities to X, and clear places where we’re targeting a different performance. And we’re taking feedback from devs including Larian, I met with them today to talk about it and I’m confident we’re going to find a good solution and we’re going to learn,” he said.

The PC version of the title is currently the highest rated game of 2023 on Metacritic and the 34th highest rated game of all time.

We’re still plugging away at a full review of this vast game, but from our first impressions of the Baldur’s Gate 3 early access, Nick wrote, “While it’s rough and ready, I have to say I’m really enthralled by the experience so far. Baldur’s Gate 3 has tons of depth and enjoyable enough gameplay that I’m willing to look past the bugs of early access. It was quite frustrating at times but still forgivable. The good experiences were more than enough to make up for the bugs and these will only improve over time, making BG3 one of the best in-depth RPGs in a long while. Things can only improve from here on out and I can’t wait to see what comes in chapter 2.”
