The 4X grand strategy game Star Trek: Infinite will release for PC and Mac on 12th October 2023, Paradox and developer Nimble Giant Entertainment have announced.

Starting off decades before the maiden voyage of The Next Generation’s Enterprise D, you’ll be able to shape how the Alpha and Beta Quadrants change through the era of Star Trek depicted in the sci-fi’s early 90s heyday. Playing as either the Federation or the Romulan, Klingon or Cardassian empires, you’ll push to grow your boundaries, encountering neighbouring minor nations and either looking to dominate them, or more peacefully induct them into your empire. Each faction has a bespoke mission tree that leans into the lore and stories from the TV series.

Those who pre-order the game will receive Star Trek: Lower Decks uniform options, the U.S.S. Cerritos science ship with special options for minor nations, and the Klingon advisor voice line “Qapla”. There’s also a Digital Deluxe Edition that includes a digital artbook, the game soundtrack, and an in-game music pack with more music from across Star Trek film and TV.

As for the gameplay, it’s heavily based on Paradox Interactive’s own Stellaris, with a familiar style to galactic and solar system maps, gameplay systems for resource gathering and more. Right from the game’s announcement back in June, people remarked that it felt like a Stellaris total conversion mod, though one with a full development cycle and team put behind it. Could this be… The Best of Both Worlds?

We previewed Star Trek: Infinite alongside this announcement, and I greatly enjoyed the game’s rendition of 90s era Trek. I wrote, “We’ve just a few hours under our belts playing as the Federation in Star Trek: Infinite, but those few hours were a great nostalgia hit for someone that grew up on 90s Trek. I’m certainly keen to play more and delve into the different options that the other factions provide, but I’m already daydreaming of how this game can expand with DLC additions for years to come after the game’s release.”
