Earth’s Mightiest Heroes have officially retired with Marvel’s Avengers having been delisted from all digital storefronts. If you attempt to search for the game on PlayStation, Xbox, or PC and you’ll find no sign of the superhero action RPG.
It’s something we’ve know for a long time now, with publisher Square Enix announcing that the game would be removed from sale back in January. Content updates for Marvel Avengers had slowed and although improvements were made following the game’s launch, it had fundamental issues that would require more than a pitch to fix.
If you already own a copy of Marvel’s Avengers, it’s still playable. Similarly, if you manage to pick up a physical copy, it will still work, even the online multiplayer. However, Square and developer Crystal Dynamics will no longer support the title with updates.
Marvel’s Avengers: what went wrong?
Since going hands on with an early build of Marvel’s Avengers, it felt like a singleplayer action game awkwardly stretched to fit the endlessly replayable mould its publisher demanded. Square Enix wanted to create the next Destiny or The Division but it simply didn’t work. Marvel’s Avengers succeeded in assembling a cast of heroes with diverse powers and playstyles within a fun albeit repetitive co-op brawler. The formula could have worked if not for a lack of interesting multiplayer content, convoluted progression systems, and missing features such as online cross-play and a “join-in-progress” option.
On the other hand, the game’s free content updates were a nice shot in the arm. Sharpshooters Kate Bishop and Hawkeye joined the Avengers cast not long after launch with Black Panther helming his own free expansion – War for Wakanda – in 2021.
Since then, however, the arrival of new heroes felt less significant. The PlayStation-exclusive Spider-Man content came and went with little fanfare, followed up Jane Foster whose moveset and powers closely mimicked that of Thor. The Winter Soldier was the last character added, though reports suggest that Crystal had planned for more, including Captain Marvel, She-Hulk, and Ironheart. Although they will never be playable, it would be great for the developers to share their cancelled plans with the fan community.
Funnily enough, now is probably the best time to play. Paywalls have been torn down with everyone able to access all bonus heroes a plethora of previously overpriced costumes. If anything, the singleplayer campaign is still worth a playthrough.

I’m a huge comic fan, a massive PlayStation Fan and even I could stomach this game. It was terrible from the offset and when you compare with with incredible renditions of Spider-Man [both Parker and Morales] and Batman, even though fundamentally its a different style of game, it was miles off.
