Naughty Dog has officially announced The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered, with a release date confirmed for January 19th, 2024. The PS5 Remaster features native 4K support and 4K upscaling in performance mode, improved graphics, and uses features of the PS5 DualSense controller. There’s also a new roguelike survival mode called No Return – more on that later – and three levels that were cut from the original release.
If you already own the game on PS4 there’s an upgrade option. However, unlike some earlier Sony games this generation, the PS5 upgrade is not free and will cost $10 USD.
How to upgrade if you own the PS4 digital version of The Last Of Us Part 2
When the game is released on January 19th 2024, just head over to the PlayStation Store and search for The Last of Us Part 2. You will be able to access the upgrade from there.
Alternatively, find the The Last of Us Part 2 game hub within your game library. Find and select the upgrade offer, which will take you to the store page to complete the purchase and upgrade.
You can now download the PS5 version of the game.
How to upgrade to PS5 if you own The Last Of Us Part 2 on disc
It’s rather more annoying if you own the game on disc. You must first dig out the disc and load it in to your PS5, then head over the the PlayStation Store or use the link on the game hub and purchase the upgrade. Note that you will need to have the PS4 disc in the drive every time you want to play the PS5 remaster.
If you upgraded from a PS4 to a digital-only PS5 with no disc drive then you’re out of luck – if you’ve got the digital PS5 slim, then you can buy a disc drive add-on. Sony clearly state there is no way to upgrade a disc version on a digital-only console.
If you were a fan of The Last of Us Part 2’s brutal combat, then No Return looks like the game mode for you. This is a roguelike that will challenge you to overcome a string of randomised encounters at locations drawn from the main game, building up to a final boss battle.
Each encounter will have some kind of goal or unique elements, so you might be hunted by humans in one area, be assaulting a camp in another, trying to defend or capture a location, and more. We also noticed some intriguing modifiers, so one snippet of gameplay featured an invisible enemy.
You’ll be able to play as Ellie and Abby, as well as a cast of other unlockable characters including Dina, Jesse, Lev, and Tommy, each of which has unique traits that can lend them to different playstyles, and unlockable skins to show off your accomplishments. You’ll also be upgrading your weapons along the way to give yourself better odds. You’ll absolutely need them considering the monstrosities you’ll eventually be facing off against!
